America to Japan Crossing - The Trimaran

Choosing Design - Step 1
Design Requirements
1) Powered by Sail
2) Space for 2 people and one dog to live, Space for 2 guests to attend different legs of the journey. For 2 - 4 short stay visitors.
3) Designer willing to help with the project and is informative as to the process of building a boat (Since Miki and I have never taken on a boat building project before this)
4) Construction and size of the boat will be limited to the area in the backyard of our house
5) Boat will be of utilitarian design and completable by March or April 2003 (We have extended this to a dropdead date of June, 30 2003 to leave on Nov 2003 after that date we will be leaving Nov 15, 2004) . We understand the tradeoff will be a limited amount of wood working, and carpentry will be kept to a minimum.
6) Boat will meet requirements of long distance ocean travel. With the longest single possible leg of the journey being 45 days (the crossing from Japan back to Los Angeles).

Design Chosen
1) The design that we have chosen is the Kurt Hughs 37 foot flared hull trimaran.
2) Extend the design 2 feet to add some extra space.
3) Move the cockpit sole up one foot and add a crawl space to connect the main cabin and aft berth.
4) Increase the size of the shower/head to act as a giant wet area.
5) Install a hatch above the front berth so people can access it from the wet area or just pop out the top.
6) Change the center berth to a desk/navigation area
7) Use one or two 9.9 hp outboards instead of an inboard.
8) Install power generation equipment ( 8 solar cells mounted on the aft arms, 2 wind mills mounted on an aft frame )
9) Build in a flammable storage area for 4, 40 lbs canisters of propane
